Nighttime muscle cramps are a common problem among older adults, often causing pain and disrupting sleep. Recent research suggests that Vitamin K2 may be a safe and effective option for relieving these symptoms.
Vitamin K2 is a nutrient that plays an important role in bone formation and calcium regulation in the body. It helps direct calcium into the bones rather than allowing it to accumulate in blood vessels.
In addition to supporting bone health, Vitamin K2 may also help reduce muscle contractions that can lead to cramps.
A study conducted in older adults found that taking 180 micrograms of Vitamin K2 daily reduced the frequency of muscle cramps by 2.67 times compared to a placebo group.
Participants also reported a significant reduction in pain levels, with improved scores on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), indicating better overall comfort and satisfaction.
The study reported no serious side effects, and most participants were able to take Vitamin K2 safely over time.
However, individuals taking Warfarin or other blood-thinning medications should exercise caution, as Vitamin K2 may interfere with blood clotting mechanisms.
