Leukorrhea

Leukorrhea (Vaginal Discharge)

Normal vaginal discharge plays an essential role in lubricating the vaginal walls and protecting against friction or irritation. Its characteristics vary throughout the menstrual cycle—clear or white around ovulation, and sometimes thicker or yellowish without odor. During pregnancy, it may become more watery or milky white with a mild scent. Other influencing factors include diet, sexual activity, stress, and medications.

Abnormal discharge often appears yellow or green and may indicate an infection. While some discharge correlates with menstrual phases, others signify bacterial or fungal infections in the vagina or female genital tract.

Patient Advice

  • Clean the genital area with water and mild soap.
  • Avoid vaginal douching.
  • Refrain from using scented products on the genital area or inside the vagina.

When to See a Doctor

  • Abnormal color, odor, or consistency of discharge.
  • Significantly increased discharge volume.
  • Itching or burning around the vulva or vagina.
  • Intermenstrual bleeding or postcoital bleeding.
  • Painful urination.
  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain.
