Not only elderly can get osteoporosis

When aging, strength of the bone begins to deteriorate from loss of calcium that continuously accumulated inside of bone. Fragility of the bone causes osteoporosis. A mild accident can break a bone of the patient.

The cause of osteoporosis

The body will generate and accumulate bone mass until 35 years old, then there will be more deterioration rather than accumulation, leading to rapid imbalance of body’s mass, resulting in bones becoming more fragile, making them less able to support weight or withstand impact forces.  Osteoporosis is more common in females due to smaller bone size and the loss of estrogen hormone after menopause. Osteoporosis can occur at various stages of life, not just in the elderly.

Symptoms of osteoporosis

·      First stage

The first stage often has no change inside of the body and has no illness to be seen.

·      Second stage

Patients often have back pain, hunchback posture, decreased height and pain at the back when lifting heavy objects.

·      Third stage (severe persistent)

Even a minor impact can cause fractures in certain parts of the bone. Therefore, Osteoporosis is a condition with high risk, as it can lead to disability or increase the likelihood of mortality in affected individuals.

Factors that cause osteoporosis

1.Sex

Women have a lower ratio of bone than men that are prone to deterioration, especially women with menopause will result in rapid loss of bone mass. Due to decreased estrogen, it can increase the chance of getting osteoporosis.

2.Genetic

If it is found that someone in the family has a history of osteoporosis and bone fractures, the next generation is also at risk of developing osteoporosis and experiencing bone fractures.

3.Tobacco and alcohol

Alcohol and nicotine are toxins that destroy the bone mass generating cell.

4.Some kinds of medications.

Medications that interrupt the generating of the bone mass such as steroids .

5.High sodium food , coffee and tea, if they are drunk too much it will accelerate expelling of calcium.

Quantity of calcium that needed by age

Calcium and vitamin D are essential minerals in strengthening the bone and  each age has different quantities of needed calcium. Drinking milk regularly is an easy calcium supplement in large quantities, meanwhile you can get calcium from other kinds of food such as fish that can be eaten with bones, greens such as chinese kale, bok choy, lettuce, etc.

Span of Age (Year)

Daily needed quantity of calcium of the body (Milligrams)

Children (1-9 years)

800

Teen (10-19 years)

1200

Adult (20-60 years)

800

Pregnant women

1200

Menopause age women

1000

Elderly (60 years)

800

Regularly supplementing an adequate amount of calcium in conjunction with exercising to increase muscle mass and density joints.

The diagnosis of osteoporosis

The doctor uses specialized X-ray technology to measure bone Mineral Density (BMD) throughout the body. Most commonly, they choose to assess the density of bones in the spine, hip, and lower back, as these areas are most susceptible to fractures from osteoporosis. Standard X-rays are not capable of measuring bone density.
